Forgoing the conventional rugged, off-road appeal of modern trucks, Toyota takes a nostalgic detour to the days of high-speed, low-ride street trucks. The stage for this revelation was the 2023 SEMA Show, where Toyota's Calty Design Studio and R&D team showcased the Tacoma X-Runner Concept. Derived from the freshly minted 2024 Toyota Tacoma, this truck is a callback to a genre that has faded but clearly not forgotten.
Underlying this adventurous venture is Toyota’s new TGNA-F product platform, lauded for its flexibility and efficient development capabilities. According to Sheldon Brown, Chief Engineer at Toyota Motor North America, this platform serves as the backbone that made the rapid development of the X-Runner Concept possible.
What's Purring Under the Hood?
Eager to dismantle preconceived notions about what a Tacoma can be, the automaker has infused the X-Runner with some serious muscle. Anchoring the concept is a modified i-FORCE 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6, engineered to churn out an eye-popping 421 horsepower and a whopping 479 lb-ft of peak torque. This isn’t just for show; this power is effectively dispatched to the rear wheels via a Tundra solid axle, equipped with an electronic locking differential and a 4.30:1 final drive. Intriguingly, this engine modification will find its way to future Tundra models as part of a TRD Performance Package.
The mechanicals are equally impressive, with the frame and track width augmented for stability and performance. The truck incorporates Tundra air-suspension to lower the ride height without sacrificing utility and is meticulously designed to optimize on-road dynamics.
Visually Striking, Distinctly Tacoma
At first glance, the X-Runner doesn't betray its Tacoma roots. A majority of the body is sprayed in the original Speedway Blue, a hat-tip to the inaugural X-Runner. This is tastefully contrasted with matte black on the hood, A-pillars, and roof, along with red accents that add a touch of sporty aggression.
Not just a pretty face, the Tacoma X-Runner features a litany of aesthetic and functional improvements. The front fascia showcases Tacoma XB LED Projector headlights with uniquely designed “X-Runner” lenses. Aero-fairings and venting offer both form and function, while custom interior accents and paddle shifters add to the performance vibe of the truck.
Mike Tripp, Toyota's Group Vice President of Marketing, summed it up best by stating that the Tacoma X-Runner Concept widens the boundaries of what the Tacoma platform can achieve. It's a message loud and clear: Toyota is open to the rebirth of the street truck, and the X-Runner Concept is its opening statement.
