Toyota breaks new ground with the 2024 Tacoma Trailhunter, a purpose-built overlanding vehicle that initially debuted as a concept at the 2022 SEMA show. This trail-ready offering elevates Toyota's long-standing reputation for reliability and quality, allowing adventurers to purchase a factory-developed overlander directly from the dealership.
Underpinning the Trailhunter's performance is a potent powertrain that fuses a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with a 48-hp electric motor. This combination, enabled by a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack, produces an impressive 326 horsepower and a substantial 465 lb-ft of torque. This output almost doubles the torque of Toyota's current V6 truck. Toyota plans to release fuel efficiency statistics closer to the vehicle's on-sale dates.
Toyota's collaboration with the Australian-based ARB has led to the integration of an innovative Old Man Emu (OME) 4x4 Suspension. This cutting-edge technology ensures superior off-road control and load-bearing capacity, further refined by a state-of-the-art Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system. This system adjusts damping forces in real-time, delivering a luxurious ride regardless of terrain.
In Canada, the Trailhunter is available solely as a four-wheel-drive model, boasting an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with an Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) feature. This is paired with a standard electronic locking rear differential, providing optimal traction on all types of terrain.
The joint efforts of Toyota and ARB are also visible in other robust features, such as the 2.5-inch forged monotube shocks, rear recovery points, a steel rear bumper, and a bed utility bar with removable MOLLE panels. Other notable aspects include a heritage-inspired "TOYOTA" grille in a distinctive bronze colour, rock rails, and high-strength steel skid plates.
The Trailhunter also caters to modern technological demands. It features an integrated air compressor for quick tire inflation, coupled with a Multi-Terrain Monitor that allows drivers to assess potential trail obstacles via a 14-inch touchscreen. Additionally, the well-planned lighting design illuminates the truck's bed and surrounding area, facilitating easy camp setups even in low-light conditions.
In essence, the 2024 Tacoma Trailhunter represents Toyota's unwavering dedication to pushing the boundaries of overlanding vehicles. By delivering an adventure-ready rig straight off the factory line, Toyota reaffirms its commitment to providing drivers with exceptional off-road capabilities without compromising on quality or reliability.
